John Newton said about himself (on a plaque at St. Mary Woolnoth):
JOHN NEWTON, Clerk
Once an infidel and libertine
A servant of slaves in Africa,
Was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour
JESUS CHRIST,
restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach
the Gospel which he had long laboured to destroy.
He ministered,
Near sixteen years in Olney, in Bucks,
And twenty-eight years in this Church.

  • Hymns

Most of the hymns are known by their first line, so they are given here their first line as title. Newton gave them other titles, they are here put in brackets. The "Short Hymns" of the third book of Olney Hymns don't have special titles.

John Newton published most of his hymns in the work Olney Hymns.
