The Latter Day Saint newspaper, Messenger and Advocate, contains a record of the dedication of the first Latter Day Saint temple, Kirtland Temple, 27 March 1836.

According to this account, "one thousand persons" crowded in for the eight hour dedication service. During this time six hymns were sung, Sidney Rigdon gave a two-and-a-half hour sermon, Joseph Smith, Jr. read a half hour dedicatory prayer, the assembly voted to affirm the various positions of leadership in the church, and several church leaders gave their own speaches.

The newspaper account includes the full text of the dedicatory prayer and each hymn, and includes a summary Rigdon's sermon and the various other procedings that took place.

Joseph Smith, Jr. also made a record of the event in his diary.
