Vayavinu Bamikra project/Repeating verses

From Free media library

There is widespread but relatively late Ashkenazic custom (one which has been adopted by many other communities as well in recent years) to repeat certain verses about which there is (or was) some doubt about the correct masoretic reading. The most important examples of this are certain verses in Esther and the last verse of Parashat Zakhor (Deuteronomy 25:19).

Rabbi Mordecai Breuer has made strong arguments that this custom should be abandoned in practice, for the simple reason that our access today to the very accurate masoretic manuscripts - much better ones than were available to those who began the custom - leaves absolutely no doubt as to what the correct reading is in each and every case.

The list of cantillation recordings in the Vayavinu Bamikra project will note readings in which such verses are repeated.

Rabbi Brueur's article Mikraot she-yesh la-hem hekhra can be found here.
